Lela Holt, Literary Manager, began working with Troupe Texas in 2009. Lela oversees the literary development of new plays for our regular productions and for our bi-weekly presentation of the New Works Forum.
Originally from Clarksville, TN, Lela received her BA in Theatre Design with a Spanish minor from Austin Peay State University in 2003. She is now a graduate student in Theatre History and

Criticism at Texas State University - San Marcos. Prior to her studies at Texas State, Lela studied Spanish language drama at the University of Texas in El Paso. While there, she acted as assistant director, costume designer, and makeup artist for
Un hogar sólido as part of the
Dia de Los Muertos celebrations.
In 2008, she served as Assistant Dramaturg to Joe Luis Cedillo for the Black and Latino Playwrights’ Conference in San Marcos. In November of 2008,Lela presented a paper entitled “Towards an Inescapable Fate: Moira’s Thread of Destiny as Revealed in
Fedra y otras griegas by Ximena Escalante” at the Bi-National Celebration of Contemporary Mexican Theatre Conference in El Paso, Texas. This year, Lela will present a paper, “José Joaquín Gamboa: Mexico’s Forgotten Realist Playwright,” at the 2009 Mid-America Conference on Hispanic Literature.
Currently, Lela is researching and writing her thesis,
Rewriting Greek Myth: An Exploration of Three Contemporary Mexican Plays, which is the study of the treatment of the Greek mythological figures Phaedra, Antigone, and Medusa.
A busy playwright, Lela has just competed a translation of Gamboa's
The Way of the Cross (Via crucis). This past year, she has written
The
Silver Dollar,
Broken Rope,
Restless Passions (a radio soap opera), and is currently working on
Piensa en mi (a one-woman play).
Beginning this fall, Lela will work with high school students in San Marcos to develop a series of bi-lingual dramas as a means of teaching English as a Second Language.
